Prince Kakugyo

Japanese: 覚行法親王 - かくぎょうほっしんのう

Year of birth: 2.4 of Jōhō (1075)
The first example of a monk prince to appear in the late Heian period. He was the third son of Emperor Shirakawa, and his mother was Fujiwara no Tsuneko. He became a monk at Ninna-ji Temple and studied Esoteric Shingon Buddhism. In January 1099, he was proclaimed the first monk prince, and performed various esoteric Buddhist rituals and played the role of spiritually protecting the Imperial family. He also climbed Mount Koya, which was considered a Pure Land on earth at the time, and contributed to making it a sacred place.

平安後期に出現した法親王の初例。白河天皇の第3皇子,母は藤原経子。仁和寺で出家し,真言密教を修学。承徳3(1099)年1月,初の法親王を宣下され,各種の密教修法を営み天皇家を霊的に守護する役割を担った。当時,この世の浄土とされた高野山に登山し,その霊場化にも貢献した。
