A bird of the family Columbiformes (Columbidae) (illustration). It bred in the eastern part of North America, from central and southern Canada to Louisiana and Florida, and wintered in the southeastern United States, but became extinct in the early 20th century. It is about 43 cm long. The head and upper parts are blue-gray, with black vertical stripes on the scapulae and small black spots on the coverts. The flight feathers are gray-black. The underparts are rich burgundy, and the belly is white. The tail is long and wedge-shaped and gray-brown. The beak is black, the legs are red, and the iris is orange-red. ハト目ハト科の鳥(イラスト)。カナダの中部,南部からルイジアナおよびフロリダにかけての北アメリカの東部で繁殖し,合衆国南東部の諸州で越冬していたが20世紀初めに絶滅した。全長約43cm。頭部と上面は青灰色で,肩羽に黒い縦斑があり,雨覆に黒い小斑がある。風切は灰黒色。下面は豊かなぶどう色,腹は白い。灰褐色の尾はくさび状で長い。くちばしは黒く,脚は赤色,虹彩は橙赤色。1腹1個の卵を産み,両親で2週間抱卵し,さらに2週間育雛(いくすう)した。
