A web browser for PCs developed by Google. It can be downloaded from the company's website. Its official name is "Google Chrome." The beta version was released to the public in September 2008, and the official version was released in December of the same year. It was upgraded to version 2.0 in May 2009, adding features such as full-screen page display. As of July 2009, the only official version available to the public is for Windows XP/Vista, but Linux and Mac OS versions are also in development.
As Internet use that utilizes the capabilities of external computers, such as web applications and cloud computing, becomes more widespread, it was developed with three main focuses: simple screen design, fast page processing, and secure web access, making it easy to use not only for browsing general web pages, but also as a platform for running applications on a page.
It is developed by Google, but the programs and technical information are open source and are developed under the name Chromium. Chrome is Chromium to which Google has added its own functions. Chrome/Chromium itself also uses open source technologies, such as adopting Webkit as its HTML rendering engine.

グーグルが開発したパソコン用のウェブブラウザー。同社のウェブサイトからダウンロードできる。正式名称は「Google Chrome」。2008年9月にベータ版が一般公開され、同12月に正式バージョンが公開された。09年5月には2.0にバージョンアップされ、ページの全画面表示等の機能が追加された。09年7月現在、一般向けの公式バージョンが提供されているのはWindows XP/Vistaのみだが、Linux版、Mac OS版の開発も進められている。
ウェブアプリケーションやクラウドコンピューティングなど、外部のコンピューターの能力を活用するインターネットの利用法が広まりつつあるのに合わせて、一般のウェブページの閲覧だけでなく、ページ上でアプリケーションを実行するプラットフォームとしても使いやすいよう、シンプルな画面デザインと高速なページ処理、安全なウェブアクセスの3点を主眼に開発された。
開発はグーグルが行っているが、プログラムや技術情報はオープンソースとして公開されており、Chromium(クロミウム)の名称で開発が行われている。Chromiumにグーグルが独自に機能を追加して配布しているのがChromeという位置づけになる。Chrome/Chromium自体もHTMLレンダリングエンジンにWebkitを採用するなど、オープンソースの技術を利用している。
