[Mediastinal emphysema]
An abnormal accumulation of air (gas) in the mediastinum. It is also called pneumomediastinum. It occurs when gas enters the mediastinum due to injury or rupture of the mediastinum or adjacent organs, such as trauma, or rupture of the alveoli or esophagus.
