... The stomach secretes the digestive enzyme pepsin and hydrochloric acid (also called gastric acid), which enhances its action and has a bactericidal effect. Mucus is secreted from the epithelium of the inner surface of the stomach, and hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) is secreted from the pyloric antrum, protecting the gastric mucosa from being digested by digestive juices (this is called the gastric mucosa defense mechanism). In addition, intrinsic factor, which helps absorb vitamin _B12 and helps prevent anemia, and gastrin, which stimulates gastric motility and gastric juice secretion and indirectly stimulates pancreatic juice secretion and is closely involved in digestion, are also secreted.
