Trnka (English spelling) Jiři Trnka

Trnka (English spelling) Jiři Trnka

An animation artist active in Czechoslovakia. Born in the Czech Republic. Known as a master of puppet animation, he worked with a wide variety of materials, including cels and paper cuttings. He was also an illustrator and picture book writer, and first produced several cel animations, and in "The Gift" (1946) he used graphic art, which was innovative at the time, influencing American directors such as S. Bossastow. After 1947, puppets became mainstream, and his works, full of oriental, mystical beauty such as "The Tsar's Nightingale" (1948), "Bayaja" (1950), and "Ancient Czech Legends" (1952), as well as the satirical "The Good Soldier Švejk" series (1954) and "The Hand" (1965, his final work), and the magnificent "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1959), are all masterpieces that will remain in the history of animation films.
