...Rotterdam is the largest oil import base in Europe, and three major pipelines run from here to Cologne in Germany (completed in 1960), via Antwerp in Belgium, to Vruy in Wallonia (1971), and further to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Before the war, industry in the Rotterdam area was limited to shipbuilding, machinery and food, but after the war, the region was selected as the most important area in the Dutch industrialization plan, and European and American petrochemical companies have been moving into the Europoort waterfront industrial area (constructed 1958-69) on the south bank of the Meuse River. At the beginning of World War II, most of Rotterdam's old town, which dates back to the 17th century, was destroyed by German bombing in May 1940, and after the war it was reborn as a new city that utilized modern architectural techniques. *Some of the terminology references "Europoort" are listed below.
