The sound made when a strong wind blows against a thin rod such as an electric wire. The sound made when a whip is swung quickly is based on the same principle, but a group of vortices called "Kármán vortices" that form downwind of the electric wire stimulate the vibration of the wire, creating the whistling sound. The faster the wind speed, the higher the vibration frequency and the higher the sound. It was studied by V. Strouhal of Germany in 1878. Aeolian sounds are named after Aeolus, the ancient Greek god of wind. [Masaji Ota] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
