Lisianthus - Turk's cap lily

Japanese:
Lisianthus - Turk's cap lily

A semi-winter-hardy annual or perennial plant of the Gentianaceae family (APG classification: Gentianaceae). It is also called Lisianthus from its old genus name. It is native to North America, and is unrelated to the Japanese name "Toruko", nor is it a member of the bellflower family. The stem is thin and upright, about 60 cm tall. The leaves are oblong, smooth, waxy, and gray-green. At the top of the stem, a large, cup-shaped, pale purple flower blooms. There are dark spots at the base of the petals. Horticultural species include deep purple, peach, and white flowers, and cut flowers grow well even in the high temperatures of summer, so in recent years it has been used a lot in the summer. It is usually sown in autumn under a vinyl greenhouse, but the seeds are very small and it requires skill to grow the seedlings, making it somewhat unsuitable for cultivation at home.
