The castle town of Iga Province and the administrative, economic and cultural center of the entire Iga region. The place name was first mentioned in Ichijo Kaneyoshi's Fujikawaki at the end of the 15th century, and it was under the rule of the Niki clan from the 15th to 16th centuries.
