…Spain, which remained neutral during World War I, enjoyed economic development, but labor disputes continued to occur, and the labor movement led by socialists also grew in the Asturias region. In October 1934, during the Second Republic (1931-39), the Asturian Revolution broke out, centered around Oviedo, and a workers' commune was established, but it was suppressed within about two weeks, becoming one of the important catalysts for the civil war that broke out two years later. The Kingdom of Asturias, which existed from the 8th to 10th centuries, inherited and further developed the artistic style of the Visigothic Kingdom, with its capital Oviedo as its center.
