Year of birth: 1712
A town painter of the Kano school in the mid-Edo period. Sano, commonly known as Toyofusa. He lived in Nezu, Edo, and was known by the pseudonyms Sengetsudo, Reiryoudo, Gyokujuken, and Gesso. He was a pupil of Kano Gyokuen Shushin. He mainly produced hand-painted pictures and votive plaques, and not a single print has been confirmed. He also produced picture books and illustrated manuals, and Toriyamahiko (Sekien Gafu) (1773) is well known. He is also known for his series of picture books about monsters, including The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons (1776), Continued One Hundred Demons (1779), One Hundred Demons Collection (1781), and Gazu Hyakki Tsurezurebukuro (1784). He learned haiku from Toryuso Enshi of the Edo Theater, and so he also produced many illustrations for illustrated haiku books. He trained many pupils, including the ukiyo-e artists Kitagawa Utamaro and Utagawa Toyoharu, and has close ties with ukiyo-e.

江戸中期の狩野派の町絵師。佐野氏,俗称豊房。江戸の根津に住み,船月堂,零陵堂,玉樹軒,月窓と号した。狩野玉燕周信の門人。肉筆画,絵馬の制作を主とし,一枚絵(版画)は1点も確認されていない。絵本,絵手本もあり,『鳥山彦(石燕画譜)』(1773)が著名。また,『百鬼夜行』(1776),『続百鬼』(1779),『百鬼拾遺』(1781),『画図百鬼徒然袋』(1784)と続く妖怪絵本も知られている。俳諧を江戸座の東流窓燕志に学んだ関係で絵入俳書の挿絵も多い。浮世絵師の喜多川歌麿や歌川豊春など多くの門人を育成,浮世絵との繋がりは緊密である。
