...The carbon tetrahedron theory (1874) of van't Hoff and Le Bel and the stereoisomerism based on it were experimentally supported by E. Fischer's research at the end of the 19th century. The absolute configuration remained a difficult problem, and for a long time the relative configuration was used conventionally, but in 1951 J. M. Jijvoet et al. determined the absolute configuration by anomalous X-ray scattering of sodium rubidium tartrate, putting an end to the problem. Among the other stereoisomers pointed out by van't Hoff, the optical isomerism of allene was proved by William Hobson Mills (1873-1959) et al. around 1935. ...
