Bird nest fauna - Bird nest fauna
A group of marine fauna that lived in the environment surrounding the coral reefs that developed on the Pacific coast of the Japanese archipelago in the Late Jurassic Period (approximately 150 million years ago). It consists of a variety of calcareous algae, reef-building corals that indicate warm waters, stromatoporoids, gastropods including Nerinea, bivalves, ammonites, brachiopods, sea urchins, and crinoids. The Torisu Group, whose type site is Torisu in the Sakawa region of Kochi Prefecture, is a stratum that contains many lenses of reef limestone (black and oily smelling) about 300 m long, and similar deposits and fauna are distributed in a narrow, elongated area from the Sakamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture through southern Shikoku and the central Kii Peninsula to the Itsukaichi region of Tokyo, and further extends to the Soma region of Fukushima Prefecture.
