A city in southwestern Andhra Pradesh, southeast India. It is located about 175 km south-southwest of Hyderabad, at the confluence of the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna River, and the Hindli River. In the 18th century, it was the capital of a small princely state, and came under British rule in 1838. After independence, it was the capital of Andhra Pradesh until the state capital was moved to Hyderabad in 1956 when the state was reorganized. It is a commercial center, and is active in the processing of cotton, oilseeds, and tobacco produced in the vicinity. There are many oil mills in particular. It is home to the science and medical colleges of Andhra University. Population: 236,313 (1991).
