Kurnool (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Andhra Pradesh, southeast India. It is located about 175 km south-southwest of Hyderabad, at the confluence of the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna River, and the Hindli River. In the 18th century, it was the capital of a small princely state, and came under British rule in 1838. After independence, it was the capital of Andhra Pradesh until the state capital was moved to Hyderabad in 1956 when the state was reorganized. It is a commercial center, and is active in the processing of cotton, oilseeds, and tobacco produced in the vicinity. There are many oil mills in particular. It is home to the science and medical colleges of Andhra University. Population: 236,313 (1991).

インド南東部，アンドラプラデーシュ州南西部の都市。ハイデラバード南南西約 175km，クリシュナ川支流のトゥンガバドラ川とヒンドリ川の合流点に位置。 18世紀には小藩王国の首都で，1838年イギリス支配下となった。独立後，1956年の州再編に伴うハイデラバードへの州都移転まで，アンドラプラデーシュの州都であった。商業中心地で，付近で産する綿花，搾油用種子，タバコの加工が盛ん。特に搾油工場が多い。アンドラ大学の科学，医学のカレッジがある。人口 23万 6313 (1991) 。
