The capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy, it is a port and industrial city. It has a population of 209,520 (2001 census preliminary figure). It is located in the Gulf of Trieste, between the lagoon Lake Grado and the Istria Peninsula of Croatia, in the northern Adriatic Sea, near the border with Slovenia. It is involved in a wide range of industries, including oil refining, shipbuilding, steel, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, paper, and food. The port of Trieste was Italy's second largest in international cargo handling volume (1978), but port operations to Austria have ceased and it is no longer as lively as it once was. Imported oil is also transported to Austria and Germany by pipeline. The city is centered around the San Giusto hill, and is home to the 14th century San Giusto Cathedral, a castle built between 1470 and 1630, an ancient Roman theater excavated in 1938, the Municipal Museum of History and Art, and a university founded in 1924. Nearby Miramare has a large garden and a castle (built 1856-1860) built by Archduke Maximilian of the Habsburg family. In winter, the cold northeast wind called the Bora blows with the force of a typhoon.

It is said to have been founded by the Celts, and in the 2nd century BC it became a Roman colony called Tergeste. Christianity spread to the region towards the end of the Western Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, it was successively ruled by the Lombard Kingdom, the Eastern Roman Empire, and the Frankish Kingdom. It became a commune (autonomous city) in 1060, but after the 15th century it came under the rule of the House of Habsburg. In 1719, a free port was built, and merchants and craftsmen gathered there, and it became a major commercial center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the French Revolution, it was ruled by France three times, in 1797, 1805, and 1809-1813, but it returned to Austrian rule, and from 1897 it sent members to the Austrian parliament. From this time on, conflicts between the Italian and Slavic inhabitants of the region intensified, and it became a disputed area between Italy and the former Yugoslavia.

イタリア北東部、フリウリ・ベネチア・ジュリア自治州の州都で、港湾・工業都市。人口20万9520（2001国勢調査速報値）。アドリア海の北部、潟湖(せきこ)グラード湖とクロアチアのイストラ半島との間に挟まれたトリエステ湾の奥に位置し、スロベニアとの国境付近を占める。精油、造船、製鉄、化学、薬品、製紙、食品など多方面にわたる工業が行われている。トリエステ港は、国際的な貨物の取扱い量ではイタリア第2位（1978）であったが、オーストリア向けの港湾業務を停止、かつての活気はみられない。輸入された石油は、パイプラインによってオーストリアやドイツにも運ばれる。市街はサン・ジュストの丘を中心に広がり、14世紀のサン・ジュスト大聖堂、1470年から1630年にかけて建てられた城、1938年に発掘された古代ローマの劇場、市立歴史・美術博物館、1924年創設の大学などがある。近郊のミラマーレには、ハプスブルク家のマクシミリアン大公によって築かれた広い庭園と城（1856～1860建設）がある。冬、ボラとよばれる冷たい北東風が、台風のような激しさで吹き荒れることで知られる。

歴史

ケルト人によって建てられたといわれ、紀元前2世紀にはテルゲステTergesteとよばれるローマの植民地となった。西ローマ帝国の末期にキリスト教が普及した。中世には、ランゴバルド王国、東ローマ帝国、フランク王国によって順次その支配下に置かれた。1060年からコムーネ（自治都市）となるが、15世紀以後はハプスブルク家の支配下に置かれた。1719年に自由港が建設されて商人や職人が集まるようになり、オーストリア・ハンガリー帝国の主要な商業の中心地となった。フランス革命後、1797年、1805年、1809～1813年の三度にわたってフランスが支配したが、その後はオーストリア支配に戻り、1897年からはオーストリア議会に議員を送った。このころから、この地域の住民であるイタリア人とスラブ人との間の対立が激化するようになり、イタリアと旧ユーゴスラビアの係争地となった。
