Coesite

Japanese: コーサイト
Coesite

A high-pressure phase of SiO 2. It was discovered in the meteorite crater in Arizona where stishovite was discovered, Arabia, southern Germany, and other places. It was later synthesized by L. Coes Jr. (1953) at 500-800 °C and 3.5 GPa. It is a transformation of quartz caused by the shock pressure of a meteorite fall. Low-pressure SiO 2 becomes coesite at 500 °C and 2.5 GPa, and at 1500 °C and 3.5 GPa. Monoclinic system, space group C 2/ c , lattice constants a 0 = 0.714, b 0 = 1.237, c 0 = 0.714 nm. β = 120°. Density 2.915 g cm -3 (measured), 2.919 g cm -3 (calculated).
