When driving a car, you constantly look ahead and adjust your speed and course. In contrast, when adjusting the heating in a room, you would normally look at the thermometer every now and then and turn the knob on the heater. When implementing automatic control without human intervention, both of these methods can be considered. The former is called continuous time control, and the latter is called sampled value control. In sampled value control, the quantity to be controlled is measured intermittently, usually at regular time intervals (Figure 1). This is called sampling, and the time at which the measurement is made is called the sampling time, and the interval is called the sampling period.

自動車の運転をするときには，たえず前方を注視し速度や進路の調整を行う。これに対して，室の暖房を調節するときには，ときどき温度計を見て暖房器のつまみを操作するのがふつうであろう。人手によらず自動制御を実施する際にもこの両様の方式が考えられる。前者を連続時間制御といい，後者をサンプル値制御という。すなわちサンプル値制御においては，制御の対象となる量を間欠的に，通常は一定時間間隔ごとに測定する(図1)。これをサンプリングといい，測定する時刻をサンプリング時刻，その間隔をサンプリング周期という。
