Winter Day - Fuyunohi

Japanese:
Winter Day - Fuyunohi

A collection of haiku poems. One volume. Compiled by Kakei. Titled "Winter Days: Five Owari Gokasen, Complete." Published in 1685 (Jokyo 2). This is the first of the "Seven Haikai Collections." It is made up of five volumes of kasen poems and six additional verses, which were performed by Basho and his Owari associates Nomizu, Kakei, Jugo, Tokoku, Shohei, and Uryu, who stopped in Nagoya during their "Nozarashi Kikou" (Travels in the Wild). The title comes from the fact that the opening verses of each renku are all about winter. Each hokku has a description, and Basho's opening hokku "Kyo-ku Kogarashi no mi wa Chikusai ni naru yana" (The crazy verse, Kogarashi no mi wa Chikusai ni naru yana) is particularly striking in its pose of madness, and the entire renku poem is accordingly full of poetic tension. This book breaks away from the style of Chinese poetry and prose and pioneers a new world of haiku, marking the first step in the Basho style.
