Polish soldier and politician. Known as the father of the independence movement. After studying in France, he served as an aide-de-camp to Washington during the American Revolutionary War, and returned to Poland in 1784 to participate in the liberal reform movement. After the Second Partition of Poland in 1794, he led an armed uprising and was captured by Russian troops. He was pardoned and later died in Switzerland.
