Tiger pufferfish (Fugu rubripes)

Japanese: トラフグ(虎河豚) - トラフグ（英語表記）Fugu rubripes

A marine fish (illustration) of the Tetraodontiformes order and Tetraodontidae family. Local names include Oyamafugu (Wakayama) and Genkaifugu (Oita). Its distribution ranges from southern Hokkaido to the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and the waters off China, but it is most common in central Honshu and south. It has a large head, a somewhat long but thick body, and a laterally compressed caudal peduncle. The dorsal side is dark brown and the ventral surface is white, with a dense covering of small spines on the surface. There are large black spots behind the pectoral fins and at the base of the dorsal fin, both of which are bordered by yellowish-white lines. The pectoral fins are yellow, the dorsal fin is brownish gray, the anal fin is white, and the caudal fin is black.

フグ目フグ科の海産魚(イラスト)。オヤマフグ(和歌山)，ゲンカイフグ(大分)などの地方名がある。分布範囲は北海道南部から朝鮮半島，台湾，中国近海にわたるが，本州中部以南に多い。頭部は大きく，体はやや長いが肥厚し，尾柄部は側扁する。背側は暗褐色で腹面は白く，表面には小棘（しようきよく）が密生している。胸びれの後方と背びれの基底部には大きい黒色斑紋があり，いずれも黄白色の線で縁どられている。胸びれは黄色，背びれは褐色を帯びた灰色，しりびれは白色，尾びれは黒色。
