…Navigator and cartographer. Italian name Giovanni Caboto. Born in Genoa, he was naturalized in Venice. After working in the Levantine trade, he stayed in Spain and suggested the possibility of a western sea route to reach the Orient. Unable to achieve his goal, he appeared in the English port of Bristol in 1494, and in 1497, he obtained a royal charter from Henry VII and sailed west, reaching the east coast of North America. Later, England used this as a basis to claim sovereignty over the region. The following year, he was shipwrecked. His son, Sebastian Cabot (1474-1557), also explored the area from Hudson Bay to Florida in 1508-09. …
