Years of birth: unknown. Head of the female Kabuki Kiri-za theater in the early Edo period. Her ancestor is a descendant of Kowaka Yotayu, a disciple of Kowaka Kohachiro from Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture). It is commonly believed that she performed in Edo Kobiki-cho in 1661 (Kanbun 1), but this is unknown. The stage name has been passed down to women for generations, and she performed in Fukiya-cho (Nihonbashi Horidome) as a kegyo (performance agent) for the Ichimura-za theater for four years from 1784 (Tenmei 4), five years from 1793 (Kansei 5), and from 1816 (Bunka 13) until the following year. <References> Kimura Kinka, "Discovery of the Odawara Kiri-za Theater," Sekine Tadamasa, "The History of the Toto Theater" (Akiko Imanishi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
