They were father and son architects from Finland. The father, Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950), was born in Rantasalmi. In 1896, he began working with Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren, and gained international recognition with the Finnish Pavilion at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.
