This arborescent lichen grows on rocks along roadsides in mountainous areas. The branch (pseudopeduncle) branches into several at the base, reaching a height of 5-8 cm, and further branches several times at the top. The branch is somewhat flattened, with dense coral-like twigs (thorny branches) on one side and bare on the other. The symbiotic algae are green algae, with granular, dark brown capitulae here and there on the branch, including the cyanobacterium Nostocium. The odonta is brown, dish-shaped, and 1-3 mm in diameter, occurring at the apex of the branch. The spores are needle-shaped, colorless, and eight-lobed. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The genus Stereocaulon is endemic to Japan, and there are 32 species. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
