[Born] Around 410 B.C. [Died] 364 BC. Cynoscephalae. Ancient Greek Theban politician and general. In 379/8 BC, he overthrew the pro-Spartan dictatorship, drove out the Spartans, and re-established democracy in Thebes. Later, in 371 BC, he defeated Sparta's hegemony at the Battle of Leuctra, and expanded Theban influence to northern Greece, including Thessaly and Macedonia. Together with his colleague Epaminondas, he led Thebes to its heyday and made it the hegemon of Greece for a time. He defeated Alexander of Pherae at Cynoscephalae, but was killed in battle.
