Abbreviation: Pup. A vast southern constellation that lies southeast of Canis Major in the winter sky. It was divided and named by French astronomer N. Lacaille. In Greek times, there was a vast constellation called Argo, which was modeled after the Argo ship from Greek mythology, but because it occupied too large an area of the sky, it was divided into four parts: stern, keel, mast, and sail, and the latter was further renamed Compass. It faces the Milky Way, and in November 1942, a nova appeared in this constellation, which was discovered by several people in Argentina, the United States, and other places.
