Ethnomusicology is a field of study that compares and examines the various musical systems of the world's peoples, while evaluating their different ways of thinking. In the past, ethnomusicology in the West was defined as the study of the music of peoples other than Europeans. However, as it has become clear that the original aesthetic sense and musical concepts of Asian and African countries have systems that are different from those of Europe, the significance of comparative research from the perspectives of each of the peoples, including Europe, is now being recognized. There are three major aspects of research: the role of music in each culture (music in a social and cultural context), the intention and perceptual recognition of the creation of music (musical behavior), and the mechanism of the music that is created and resonates (musical structure). To elucidate these themes, it is said that it is necessary to make full use of the unique methods of musicology as a whole, while drawing on the perspectives of anthropology, sociology, philosophy (aesthetics), psychology, acoustics (physics), and general art science to some extent. When looking at music in relation to society and culture, we must explore how music is related to religion (magic), literature (theology), art (performing arts), etc. in each culture, whether it is music with a strong artistic orientation (Europe, Arabia, India, Southeast Asia) or music with a social function (Africa, Oceania, Native American, etc.). As for musical behavior, we can explore and compare basic mechanisms such as musical concept (what is music?), creation (composition), transmission (education), practice (performance), and perceptual reception (appreciation) in each culture. To clarify the structure of music, visual materials are created using traditional notation, musical staves, mechanical graphing, and other unique symbolizations, or the actual state of time grammar (rhythm, tempo, form), pitch grammar (temperament, scale, melody, melody), tone grammar, and stress grammar (dynamik) are explored directly from the sounds.

世界の諸民族のさまざまな音楽体系を，それぞれ異なる思惟方法をそれなりに評価しながら比較検討する学問。かつては，欧米における民族音楽学はヨーロッパを除く諸民族の音楽を研究する学問であると定義されていた。しかし，アジア・アフリカ諸国での本来の美意識や音楽概念にはヨーロッパのものとは異なる体系が培われていることがわかってくるにつれて，現在ではむしろヨーロッパをも含めて諸民族のそれぞれの観点に立った比較研究の意義が認められるようになってきている。研究のテーマとしては，それぞれの文化のなかで果す音楽の役割 (社会的文化的脈絡における音楽) ，音楽を生み出す意図と知覚認識 (音楽行動) ，生み出された鳴り響く音楽の仕組み (音楽構造) という3つの大きな側面が考えられている。これらのテーマの解明のためには，それぞれ人類学や社会学，哲学 (美学) や心理学，音響学 (物理学) や一般芸術学の立場をある程度援用しながら，全体として音楽学独自の方法を駆使しなければならないとされている。社会文化との関連で音楽をみるときには，芸術的指向度の高い音楽 (ヨーロッパ，アラビア，インド，東南アジア) と社会機能性を帯びた音楽 (アフリカ，オセアニア，アメリカ先住民など) のそれぞれの文化に即して，宗教 (呪術) ，文学 (神学) ，芸術 (芸能) などに音楽がどのように関連づけられているかを探らなければならない。音楽行動については，音楽概念 (音楽とは何か) ，創造 (作曲) ，伝承 (教育) ，実践 (演奏) ，知覚受容 (鑑賞) などの基本的メカニズムをそれぞれの文化に即して探求し比較に供することができる。音楽構造の解明のためには，伝統的記譜法，五線譜，機械によるグラフ化，その他のユニークな記号化によって視覚資料をつくるなり，あるいは音から直接判断して時間語法 (リズム，テンポ，形式) ，音高語法 (音律，音階，旋法，旋律) ，音色語法，音強語法 (デュナーミク) の実際を探るなどのことが行われる。
