An old town in Agatsuma County, northwestern Gunma Prefecture. The eastern half lies on the northwest slope of Mt. Haruna, and the western half lies in the Agatsuma River and its tributary, the Nuru River basin; the entire town is almost entirely mountainous. Haramachi, the central town on the north bank of the Agatsuma River, has developed as a market town since the Edo period, and the Agatsuma Line runs through it. The town is known for its konjac jelly and also cultivates flowers. There are factories producing home appliances and other products. In March 2006, it merged with Higashi Village in Agatsuma County to become Higashiagatsuma Town in Agatsuma County. Area: 220.20 km2 . 群馬県北西部,吾妻郡の旧町。東半は榛名(はるな)山の北西斜面,西半は吾妻川と支流の温(ぬる)川流域を占め,全町ほぼ山地。吾妻川北岸の中心市街原町は江戸時代以来市場町として発達,吾妻線が通じる。コンニャクなどを特産し,花卉(かき)の栽培も行う。家電などの工場がある。2006年3月,吾妻郡東村と合併し町制,吾妻郡東吾妻町となる。220.20km2。1万5259人(2003)。
