[Died] March 3, 1987. Los Angeles, California. American actor and comedian. Real name: David Daniel Kaminsky. Born to a Ukrainian immigrant family, he toured hotels and nightclubs across the United States as a comedian in the 1930s. In 1941, he performed the rare song "Tchaikovsky" in the Broadway musical "Lady in the Dark," in which he recited the names of over 50 Russian composers at a rapid pace, and became so popular that he surpassed the lead actress, Gertrude Lawrence. Since then, he has frequently performed his tongue-tied songs in films and on stage. In the early 1940s, he was noticed by Hollywood filmmaker Samuel Goldwyn and entered the film industry, and was active mainly in films from 1944 to 1963. His representative works include Wonder Man (1945) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947). From 1954, he traveled around the world as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). In 1954, he received an honorary Academy Award, and in 1986, he was awarded the French Legion of Honor.

From 1878, she worked as a teacher at the Whitlock Coeducational School in Stockholm for 20 years to support her bankrupt family. During that time, she advocated radical views on women's and children's issues through lectures and journalism, and advocated gender equality, free sexual morality, and children's education through free mental work. Her most famous work, Barnets århundrade (1900), is a thoroughly child-centered theory of education that was translated into many languages ​​and spread worldwide, and had a great influence as the bible of the new education movement that flourished in the early 20th century. Her other works include Lifslinjer (2003-2006) and The Flow of Life.

Fokine and others at the Metropolitan Opera and Ballet School, and performed at Radio City Music Hall. In 1939, she joined the American Ballet Theater, and in 1942, she appeared in A. Tudor's Pillar of Fire, which earned her favorable reviews and brought her to prominence. Her repertoire was wide, from modern ballet to classical ballet, but she excelled in dramatic pieces such as Lilac Gardens and A Streetcar Named Desire. She also performed in Japan many times. In 1960, she retired after starring in In a Grove, a production based on Rashomon, with the ballet company she organized with her husband, choreographer Herbert Ross.

[Died] c. 1780. French-British mechanic and engineer. Inventor of the flying shuttle, an important step towards the invention of the automatic loom. At a young age, he was put in charge of managing his father's woolen mill, where he made many improvements to machines such as warping machines and carding machines. In 1733, he invented a new mechanism for woolen weaving that utilized a flying shuttle, and obtained a patent for it. Woolen weavers in Yorkshire, northern England, quickly adopted the invention, but formed an organization that refused to pay the patent fees. After being forced to spend a large amount of money on litigation over the patent, Kay is said to have emigrated to France and died unknown. (→Industrial Revolution)

After returning to the UK, he became one of the leading architects in Haarlem. His main works include the facade of the Leiden City Hall (1597), the Haarlem Butcher Market (1602-03), and the West Tower of the New Cathedral of Haarlem (13).

スウェーデンの女流小説家,思想家。政治家を父に旧家に生れたが,不幸に見舞われ,1868年にストックホルムに移住。 78年以降,破産した家計を支えるために同市のウィットロック男女共学校の教師を 20年間つとめた。その間に講演,ジャーナリズムなどを通じ,婦人問題,児童問題などに急進的見解を提唱,男女同権,自由な性道徳,自由精神作業による児童教育などを主唱。特に代表作『児童の世紀』 Barnets århundrade (1900) は徹底した児童中心主義的教育論を展開したもので,各国語に翻訳されて世界的に普及し,20世紀初頭に興隆した新教育運動のバイブルとして多大の影響を及ぼした。このほかにも『生命の流れ』 Lifslinjer (03~06) などの著作がある。

イギリスの機械工,技師。自動織機発明への重要な一歩となる飛杼の発明者。若くして父親が経営する毛織物工場の管理を任され,整経機や梳毛(→梳毛糸)などの機械に多くの改良を施した。1733年,飛杼を利用した毛織物の新機構を発明し,特許を取得。イングランド北部ヨークシャーの毛織物業者はすぐにこの発明を採用したが,特許料の支払いを拒む組織を結成。ケイは特許をめぐる訴訟に多額の出費を強いられた末,フランスに移住し人知れず世を去ったとされる。(→産業革命)
