The region stretching from western Romania to part of the Autonomous Region of Vojvodina in Serbia. Historically, it refers to the area bounded by the Mures River and the Danube River to the north and south, and the Transylvanian Mountains and the Tisza River to the east and west. The western part is a rich agricultural plain, while the eastern part is mountainous, producing coal, iron ore, manganese, etc., and is home to metallurgy and machinery industries. Its centre is Timisoara. Until the 15th century, it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, from 1526 to 1718 it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and until World War I it was part of Austria-Hungary, but in 1920 it became part of Romania (part of it was divided into Yugoslavia). It was also the centre of the nationalist movement in the 19th century. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
