Nakatsu Gorge

Japanese: 中津峡 - なかつきょう

This refers to the 9-kilometer gorge section of the Nakatsugawa River, a tributary of the Arakawa River, located in the Otaki area of Chichibu City in western Saitama Prefecture. It is a prefecturally designated scenic spot located within the Chichibu Tama-Kai National Park. The Nakatsugawa River flows through the Chichibu Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata, and in areas where hard rocks such as chert and slate are exposed, it creates deep gorges and cliffs. The new greenery and autumn leaves are beautiful, and the autumn leaves, especially the ones reflected against the mountain stream, make for a spectacular sight.

埼玉県西部、秩父市(ちちぶし)大滝地区にある荒川の支流中津川のうち、とくに中流9キロメートルの峡谷部分をいう。県指定の名勝で、秩父多摩甲斐(ちちぶたまかい)国立公園の区域内にある。中津川は秩父中・古生層帯を流れ、チャート、粘板岩などの堅い岩石の露出地域では、深い峡谷をつくり、絶壁となっている。新緑、紅葉は美しく、とくに紅葉は渓流に映え一幅の眺めである。
