This temple was located south of Xian in Shaanxi Province, China. It was built in 648 by the crown prince of the Tang Dynasty (later Gaozong) to repay his mother's kindness, and is also known as the Great Ci'en Temple. It flourished as a center of new Buddhism after welcoming Xuanzang, who had returned from India, and had him carry out projects such as translating Buddhist scriptures into Chinese, but fell into ruin when Buddhism was abolished in 845.
