Jionji Temple in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture is a temple of the Jion sect at the foot of Mt. Hayama. The main deity is Maitreya Bodhisattva. Originally it was of the Hosso sect, and later it was both the Tendai sect Jionji school and the Shingon sect Jionji school, but in 1952 it became the Jion sect. It is said to have been founded in the 8th century, and was rebuilt in 1108 by Gansei of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara. It was further built by Hirotoshi in the mid-12th century. It was protected by the feudal lord and given a vast area of land for temple seals, and a unique religious community of temple samurai and temple farmers developed there. Many buildings remain, including the main hall with a single-story gabled roof, and the main hall, the seated statue of Amida Nyorai, and the Hayashiya Bugaku performance dedicated to the Maitreya Hall are designated Important Cultural Properties. → Related topics Sagae [city] Jionji TempleSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
