〘名〙① 火の粉が飛び散ること。また、その火の粉。〔字鏡集（1245）〕※日本読本（1887）〈新保磐次〉四「焔は天を焦し、飛び火は八方に散る」② 火災のとき、火の粉が飛んで、離れた場所に燃えうつること。※塩原多助一代記（1885）〈三遊亭円朝〉四「見付を越して両国へ飛火致し」③ 事件などが、関係がないと思われていた人や所に及ぶこと。また、病気などが体の他の部分に移ること。※茶話（1915‐30）〈薄田泣菫〉独逸帝国の予言「仏蘭西(フランス)の二月革命から飛火(トビヒ)した伯林(ベルリン)暴動に対するその態度が」④ 伝染性膿痂疹または水疱性膿痂疹の俗称。夏季に小児に好発し、皮膚の不潔、湿疹・あせもなどが誘因となって、皮膚上に水ぶくれや発疹などを生じる。主に黄色ブドウ球菌によって起こるもので、この菌が健康な皮膚につくと、他の箇所にも他人にも伝染するので、この名がある。※言継卿記‐永祿一二年（1569）五月一〇日「陽春院之茶々飛火四十日計被相煩云々」
