A gold alloy that has been whitened by adding nickel and zinc. Its uses are the same as gold, including art and crafts, various types of jewelry, electrical contacts for communication devices, and dental alloys. The product grade is indicated by adding WG to the gold carat, and for 14K gold it is stamped K14WG. Standard products contain 10-25% nickel, 1-5% zinc, and small amounts of silver and copper, and are available in various types from 10 to 18K gold. Nickel forms a solid solution with gold and hardens, and at low temperatures it undergoes precipitation hardening, further increasing its strength. This effect is even more pronounced when platinum group elements are added, and for dental applications that require corrosion and wear resistance in particular, platinum-added gold is made by adding platinum, palladium, etc. An example composition is 55-70% gold, 5-15% silver, 6-16% platinum, and 10-15% copper, and the tensile strength reaches 590-980MPa. The addition of zinc and copper is to lower the melting point and improve castability.
