A type of equipment used in gymnastics, on which various exercises are performed, such as stepping over, straddling, climbing over, jumping on hands, handstands, and inversions. Vaulting is an exercise in which an obstacle is conquered. By jumping over an obstacle called a vaulting box, the aim is to improve basic physical strength, jumping power, agility, and bodily control, as well as to cultivate mental elements such as attention, courage, determination, and self-confidence. Jumping over a wooden horse was already being performed in ancient Rome as a basic training for soldiers in equestrianism. The modern vaulting box was invented in Sweden and was introduced to the world along with the spread of Swedish gymnastics, and has come to occupy an important position in gymnastics in school physical education along with the horizontal bar. There are two types of vaulting box: the Swedish type, which is trapezoidal and wider at the bottom than at the top, and the German type, which is rectangular, but in Japan the Swedish type is more commonly used. The vaulting box exercise developed into the horse vault, which is now a gymnastics event.
