An old town in Kashima District, in the southeastern tip of Ibaraki Prefecture. The main settlement is at the mouth of the Tone River, and is connected to Choshi City on the opposite bank by the Choshi Bridge. Since the Meiji period, beach seine fishing for sardines has been popular, and the town is one of the leading fishing bases in the country, and agricultural practices such as greenhouse horticulture are also thriving. The Hasaki Industrial Park, part of the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone, was developed in the north. In August 2005, the town was merged with Kamisu Town, Kashima District, to become a city. 茨城県南東端,鹿島郡の旧町。主集落は利根川河口にあり,対岸の銚子市と銚子大橋で結ばれる。明治以来イワシ地引網漁業が盛んであったが,全国でも有数の漁業基地であり,ハウス園芸などの農業も盛ん。北部に鹿島臨海工業地帯の一部である波崎工業団地が造成された。2005年8月,鹿島郡神栖町と合併し市制。国道124号線が通じる,神栖市となる。68.28km2。3万9002人(2003)。
