Ichigaya

A district in the eastern part of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. The name of the area is said to have come from the fact that a market was established here long ago and market purchases were made here, and that there was a first valley (Ichigaya) on the hillside plateau with many slopes and valleys. In the Edo period, there were many temple and shrine sites and samurai estates. Ichigaya Hachiman, located on the eastern edge of the plateau, west of Ichigaya Station on the JR Chuo Line, is one of the Edo Yasho Hachiman districts. The former site of the Owari Tokugawa family's upper residence was used as the site of the Military Academy in the Meiji period, and after World War II, it became the site of the International Military Tribunal and then the Ichigaya Garrison of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces. The Toei Subway Shinjuku Line, Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line and Namboku Line run through the area.

東京都新宿区東部の一地区。古くこのあたりに市が立ち、市買(いちがい)が行われたこと、また坂や谷の多い山手(やまのて)台地にあって第一の谷（一谷(いちがや)）があったことが地名の由来という。江戸時代には寺社地、武家地が多かった。台地東端、JR中央線市ケ谷駅西側の市谷八幡(はちまん)は江戸八所八幡の一つ。旧尾張(おわり)徳川家上屋敷地跡は、明治になって陸軍士官学校などが置かれ、第二次世界大戦後、国際軍事裁判所、ついで陸上自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地となった。都営地下鉄新宿線、東京地下鉄有楽町線・南北線が通る。
