Galactaric Acid - Galactarsan

C ₆ H ₁₀ O ₈ (210.14). Also known as mucic acid. A type of aldaric acid. Obtained by oxidation of galactose, galactonic acid, lactose, galactan, etc. with nitric acid. Colorless prism-like crystals. Melting point 213-214 °C, decomposition point 225 °C. Optically inactive. Used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of galactose because of poor solubility in cold water. Insoluble in ethanol. When boiled with water, it becomes soluble DL -γ-lactone C ₆ H ₈ O ₇ , which is reduced to give DL -galactonic acid. Does not reduce Fehling's solution, but shows silver mirror reaction. _{LD 50} 8000 mg/kg (mouse, oral). [CAS 526-99-8]

C₆H₁₀O₈(210.14)．粘液酸，ムチン酸ともいう．アルダル酸の一種．ガラクトース，ガラクトン酸，ラクトース，ガラクタンなどの硝酸酸化により得られる．無色のプリズム状結晶．融点213～214 ℃，分解点225 ℃．光学不活性．冷水に難溶なのでガラクトースの定性，定量に利用される．エタノールに不溶．水とともに煮沸すると可溶性のDL-γ-ラクトンC₆H₈O₇となり，それを還元するとDL-ガラクトン酸を与える．フェーリング液を還元しないが，銀鏡反応を示す．LD₅₀ 8000 mg/kg(マウス，経口)．[CAS 526-99-8]
