Balaguer, J.

...Since 1965, presidential elections based on the constitution have been held. As a result, Joaquín Balaguer (1907- ) of the Christian Social Reform Party was elected in 1966 and served as president for three terms, but was defeated by Antonio Guzmán of the Dominican Revolutionary Party in the 1978 election. The Dominican Revolutionary Party continued to rule for the next eight years, but Balaguer of the Christian Social Reform Party returned to power in the 1986 presidential election and won the 1990 election as well.
