…Dutch landscape painter. Born in Amsterdam, he spent most of his life in Kampen. He was deaf and mute, hence his nickname "The Mute of Kampen." He was a typical specialist painter who repeatedly painted only winter scenes, and established this genre as a field. His paintings, despite the occasional clever use of aerial perspective, always show a preference for strong colors such as red and black, which distinguishes them fundamentally from the monochromatic landscape paintings that followed.
