1714‐80 A representative poet of Lithuania. Born in a rural area of the Lithuanian province of East Prussia, he studied theology at the University of Königsberg and spent his life as a pastor at the Lutheran church in the village of Tolminkömen. While preaching to the German and Lithuanian villagers, he composed many Lithuanian poems in hexamita (six rhymes). After his death, his posthumous poems were discovered, and his masterpiece, the epic poem Metai (The Four Seasons), was published in 1818 with a German translation by Ludwig Rhesa, a professor at the University of Königsberg.
