Saracen (English spelling)
A European term for Muslims in Western Asia. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans called the nomadic people of the Syrian Desert Saraceni, and after the rise of Islam in the 7th century, the Byzantines adopted the term to refer to Muslims in general, and it spread to Western Europe through the Crusades.
