A European term for Muslims in Western Asia. In ancient times, the Greeks and Romans called the nomadic people of the Syrian Desert Saraceni, and after the rise of Islam in the 7th century, the Byzantines adopted the term to refer to Muslims in general, and it spread to Western Europe through the Crusades. 西アジアのイスラム教徒をさすヨーロッパ人の呼称。古くはギリシア・ローマ人がシリア砂漠の遊牧民を Saraceniと呼んでおり，7世紀のイスラムの勃興からはビザンチン人がイスラム教徒一般をさす言葉としてこれを採用し，十字軍を通して西ヨーロッパにもこの呼称が広がった。
