A theory that holds that the essence of punishment is retribution and atonement. It is the argument of the classical school. It is opposed to purposive punishment and educational punishment. Punishment as retribution is the harm imposed on the criminal for having committed the harm of a crime, and corresponds to the severity of the crime.
