An art group from the end of Imperial Russia. In 1863, 14 young artists who had left the Academy of Fine Arts in rebellion against academicism gathered around Ivan N. Kramskoy and organized the "Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions" in 1870. They held traveling exhibitions in various regional cities, aiming to popularize art and connect with the general public. They painted history, customs, and landscapes with the aim of facing Russian reality head-on rather than following Western Europe, but they declined and were dissolved during the reactionary period of the 1890s. Founders were Vasily G. Perov, Grigory G. Myasoedov, and Kramskoy. Most of the major painters from the end of the Imperial period, such as Ilya E. Repin, Vasily I. Surikov, and Ivan K. Aivazovsky, belonged to this group. (→ Russian Art) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
