…The paper became authoritative, but it became boring and fell out of competition with the general public papers. In 1929, the paper was entrusted to Elias J. S. Elias (later Lord Southwood), the owner of the publishing and printing company Odums, on the condition that it would support the Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress in terms of its political stance, and a new start was made in 1930. This condition was faithfully adhered to, but Elias thoroughly popularized the paper, hiring a large number of salesmen to go door-to-door and offering cameras, fountain pens, and even the complete works of Dickens as prizes in an attempt to increase circulation (and gain advertising). …
