Quintilianus - Marcus Fabius Quintilianus

Roman orator. Appointed by Emperor Galba as public rhetoric teacher, he was ordered by Emperor Domitian to train his successors after his retirement. His main work, the 12 volumes of the Oratory (c. 95), is an introductory book for training orators, and discusses primary education, rhetoric, subjects and arrangement, style, presentation, character and culture, etc. It is unique in that it starts from early childhood education. It also has an overview of grammar, an examination of wit and humor, an examination of the rhythm of language, and the demand for training to cultivate broad culture and high virtue. He is particularly known for Volume 10, a reading guide for students of oratory, which briefly critiques many Greek and Roman writers and their works from a rhetorical point of view. He was highly regarded as a teacher in the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period he was studied by humanists such as Erasmus and had a great influence on them.
