Sukechika Ito

Japanese: 伊東祐親 - いとう・すけちか
Sukechika Ito
Year of death: 14th February 1182 (20th March 1182)
Year of birth: Unknown. A warrior from Izu Province in the late Heian period. He was called Kawazu Jiro and Ito Jiro. His father was Sukeie. He fought with his nephew (also called cousin) Kudo Suketsune over the division of his territory, Ito Manor, and stole Kudo's wife. In resentment, Suketsune attacked him at the hunting grounds in Izu and killed his son, Kawazu Saburo Sukeyasu. Sukeyasu's children were the Soga brothers. Sukechika served the Taira clan and attempted to kill Minamoto no Yoritomo, who had been exiled to Izu, because he believed that his daughter had had an affair with Yoritomo. In 1180 (Jisho 4), Sukechika surrounded Yoritomo, who had raised an army, at Ishibashiyama and forced him to retreat, but was captured by the Minamoto clan on his way to the Battle of Fujigawa and was entrusted to his son-in-law, Miura Yoshizumi. Later, thanks to Yoshizumi's efforts, he was pardoned for his crime, but he could not accept the punishment and committed suicide.
