Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy (English)

One of the most representative painters of 19th century Russian art. Born into a poor townsman's family, he worked as a photographer in his youth, and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. However, he rebelled against the academicism of the time, actively participated in traveling exhibitions, and produced excellent work in the field of portraits. His painting "Christ in the Wilderness" (1871, Tretyakov Gallery) fully expresses the suffering Christ and is one of the masterpieces of Russian religious art. He also formed a friendship with the literary giant Tolstoy, and his portrait (1871) is also famous. He also painted Nekrasov, Saltykov-Shchedrin, and Shishkin. In his later years, his paintings became brighter and more colorful, and one of his representative works is "The Stranger" (1883). His portraits have a unique expression in the eyes.

19世紀ロシア美術を代表する画家の一人。貧しい町人階級の出で、若いころは写真師のもとで修正の仕事なども手がけ、のちペテルブルグの美術アカデミーに学んだ。しかし、当時のアカデミズムに反発して、移動展に積極的に参加し、肖像画の分野でも優れた仕事を残した。『荒野のキリスト』（1871・トレチャコフ美術館）は苦悩するキリストの姿を全的に表現して、ロシア宗教美術の傑作の一つとなった。また、文豪トルストイと親交を結び、その肖像画（1871）も有名である。このほか、ネクラーソフ、サルティコフ・シチェドリン、シーシキンなども描いている。晩年は明るく色彩豊かになり、その代表作として『見知らぬ女』（1883）がある。彼の肖像画ではその目の表情に独特のものが認められる。
