...It occurs when trophoblastic cells remaining in the body after pregnancy become cancerous, and usually develops several months to several years after pregnancy (such choriocarcinoma is called gestational choriocarcinoma). In very rare cases, choriocarcinoma may develop as a teratoma in the ovaries or testicles (in boys) unrelated to pregnancy (this is called teratocarcinoma). Choriocarcinoma produces the same hormone (chorionic gonadotropin, human chorionic gonadotropin, hCG) as in normal pregnancy, so hCG measurement is used as an indicator of the progression of the tumor. ...
